I131 Radioactive Iodine Treatment for Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is a progressive condition commonly affecting older cats. It is caused by excess production of thyroid hormones from the thyroid gland due to a tumor. The vast majority of these tumors are benign. Clinical signs are characterized by an increase in metabolic rate that can start gradually but becomes more severe over time. Your cat may be voraciously hungry, lose weight, have increased vocalizations, and have hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, and a poor hair coat.

At Weymouth Landing Cat Clinic, we are able to provide a cure for this disease that has a 96% success rate. This treatment involves a specially trained veterinarian administering a subcutaneous injection of radioactive iodine that will destroy the overactive thyroid cells and save the healthy cells. This injection is followed by a four day stay (at minimum) at our renovated radioactive iodine facility. Your cat must remain in our facility until they meet the state limit for safe release back into your home. Once back at home, there are strict guidelines that must be met to ensure the safety of you and your family for a two-week period after treatment. Follow up care can be provided by WLCC or with your referring veterinarian.

If you and your veterinarian have a feline patient in need of radiation treatment for hyperthyroidism, please reach out to us at wlccradcat@gmail.com.Our I-131 liaison, Marisa, will contact you and discuss the procedure, costs, and requirements.
